Teaching Statement

I have been fortunate in my career to be supported and mentored by great teachers. Upon reflection on my time with them, the aspects of their pedagogy that I am most profoundly affected by are not their musical insights or historical knowledge (while these are both important factors), but their investment in me as a complete musician: one who has the technical capability, mental wherewithal, and contextual information needed to achieve peak artistry. In my teaching, I aim to give back to my students, in some portion, the great benefits I have received from music and those teachers with whom I have studied.

Students will leave their study with me knowing that they are capable of greatness: they have the ability to accurately assess themselves, the ability to effectively apply the tools they have learned to their individual practice, and the ability to celebrate and learn from each new experience. When they leave my studios, the only thing that will separate them from success is practice. And while that may require a great deal of patience and mental fortitude, it is only a matter of time before they achieve their goals.
